Fleas and Worms
Fleas and worms can be a real nuisance for your dog, they are not just an inconvenience but can present them with real health problems. If left untreated, some of these parasites can make your dog seriously ill and in some cases prove fatal. Regular preventative treatments will protect your dog throughout the year. Dogs and puppies must be wormed regularly too and it’s really important to get the right product for your pet. We stock a range of worming products including tablets, pastes and spot-ons and our staff will ensure that you are given the correct dosage for your dog.
CVets are here to help you and your pet, so we offer FREE flea and worm checks for your pet by one of our nurses.
This will include us weighing your dog so that we can ensure that we give the correct dosage.
There are many different types of treatment available and we appreciate that it can be confusing choosing the right one. Some of the flea products can be bought over the counter and dispensed by the nursing team. Other, stronger products that we stock can only be dispensed by a vet. We also can advise you on products suitable for puppies, nursing bitches and adult dogs. If you have more than one dog in your home, it’s vital that you treat all of the animals as fleas can transfer from one dog to another.
Did you know that 90% of fleas live in the house? So it’s vital that you treat your environment too! Our staff will be able to advise you on suitable products to protect your home as well which are pet-safe.
Worm Treatment (including lungworm)
There have been recent cases in the north west of young dogs dying as a result of a life-threatening lungworm “Angiostrongylus vasorum”. This can be transmitted through slugs and snails and puppies are particularly at risk. We stock a Prescription Only Medicine spot-on product which is simple and easy to apply, and will protect against this killer. The same product is also effective against roundworms, FLEAS, ear mites, and sarcoptic mange mites! Please ask one of our staff for further details.
This product is NOT available “over the counter” at non veterinary outlets, so please do not mistake it for other spot on products. The ONLY currently available products which are licensed as effective against the lungworm Angiostrongylus vasorum are POMs (Prescription only Medicines) and are ONLY available via a veterinary surgeon.
Ticks can also cause health problems for your dog and if you discover one on your pet, you must make sure that it is removed completely, otherwise the head may still remain attached and cause infection. We have tick removers for sale in our surgeries or one of our nursing team will be happy to remove it for you free of charge. Your dog must also be treated with products suitable for preventing ticks in the future.
If you have any questions, please call our team who will be happy to help.
